Isle of Skye Day Trip from Inverness with GetYourGuide

I’m lucky enough to travel around the UK regularly, and whenever I visit somewhere new, I always look for ways to make the most of my trip and experience as much as possible. So, during my recent Airbnb tour around Scotland, I knew I just had to tick the magical Isle of Skye off my bucket list.

Travelling solo, I decided the best way to experience as much of Skye as possible was by booking a guided tour with GetYourGuide. I booked the Isle of Skye Discovery, Eilean Donan Castle and Highlands Tour from Inverness with GetYourGuide, and it ended up being one of my favourite Scottish adventures EVER.

Setting off early from Inverness, the journey itself quickly became part of the experience. Our tour guide was Steve, and although he currently lives in Scotland, it turns out he lived not too far from my childhood home. He made the whole day even more enjoyable with his dad jokes, interesting stories and local knowledge. Of course, a drive through the Highlands is always beautiful, but it was nice to be in the passenger seat for once. Those winding roads and those unforgettable Scottish landscapes always make the journey through Scotland feel like part of the adventure.

Our first stop was Loch Ness. I’ve visited a few times before, but that doesn't stop me from keeping my eyes peeled for Nessie. While the famous Loch Ness Monster was nowhere to be seen (still waiting!), the views across the loch were as beautiful as always. Next, we visited Eilean Donan Castle. Sitting on its own little island where three sea lochs meet, surrounded by mountains, it's beautiful. It's easy to see why it’s one of Scotland’s most photographed castles.

Then, the highlight of the trip, the Isle of Skye.

First we stopped to explore Portree, the capital of Skye. I wandered through the colourful harbour town, admired the views and soaked up the atmosphere of this beautiful island. I also stopped for some food at The Antlers Bar & Grill at The Portree Hotel, where I tried a venison burger, and it was delicious - highly recommend!

Next up was the Fairy Pools, which were the main reason I wanted to visit the Isle of Skye. I’d seen so many photos of these magical pools on Instagram and couldn’t wait to experience them for myself. Unfortunately, the Scottish weather made an appearance, and the rain arrived during the walk, but it didn’t take away from the beauty of this magical place.

The walk takes around 45 minutes to reach the top, with the furthest waterfall sitting around 1.3 miles from the car park. The further you go, the more impressive the Fairy Pools become. With crystal-clear waters, cascading waterfalls and the dramatic backdrop of the Cuillin Mountains, the scenery is truly magical. My only regret was not taking a dip in the waters!

Our final stop of the day was the famous Sligachan Bridge. This spot is known for the legend that dipping your face into the icy waters beneath the bridge for seven seconds will grant you eternal beauty. Of course, I couldn’t visit without giving it a go; eternal beauty here we are!

For me, travelling solo, this tour was the perfect way to experience Skye. I didn’t need to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads or planning every stop. I could sit back, enjoy the journey and take everything in.
